There used to be a huge stigma around female hair loss together with hair restoration. However, over the last few years, this has certainly relaxed slightly. Thanks to new techniques, more natural-looking results are achievable. Female celebrities have also spoken publicly about having hair loss and hair transplant surgery to regrow their hair. Which has helped it become more widely accepted.
It used to be thought that hair transplants are only for men. Even if they are more common among men, women can also restore their type of hair loss with this treatment. Men have hair transplants more often than women because hair loss presents itself differently to women.
Furthermore, there’s both male and female pattern baldness. However, men suffer from visible receding hairlines and a bald crown (male pattern baldness), whereas women usually only experience hair thinning. Androgenetic alopecia isn’t reversible, and because the bald patches for men are so prominent they seek a hair transplant more often.
Did you know that Naomi Campbell, Oprah Winfrey and Jennifer Aniston have all had female hair transplants? These women have all made their hair transplant surgery public. After all, celebrities are humans too, so they’re not immune to hair loss. Although some try to hide it, others are more open about this common occurrence.
Naomi (very publicly) suffered from traction alopecia for many years which became more visible in 2010. She grew increasingly concerned, so in 2016 she opted for a hair transplant. Similarly, Jennifer Aniston suffered from traction alopecia which was thought to be caused by hair extensions.
Therefore, she restored bald patches with a hair transplant. Additionally, Oprah Winfrey had a hair transplant to solve her hair thinning and baldness problems – which she hid for many years.
As mentioned above, men and women lose their hair differently. There are 3 main types of female hair loss. There’s diffuse, pattern, and localised. There are also 3 additional sub-categories within localised:
Women can have a hair transplant but it’s important to remember that usually, it’s only women with hair loss caused by DHT who are good candidates.
This is because other forms of hair loss are better treated with medication or lifestyle changes, then the hair regrows naturally. With DHT related hair loss, natural regrowth isn’t possible without medical hair loss treatment – in the form of restoration surgery.
Women can benefit from hair transplant surgery just as effectively as men however the type of procedure is slightly different.
For women, the SDHI technique is used, which was developed by Dr Balwi. This method is used to achieve maximum growth and a natural-looking finish along the hairline.
SDHI is best for women because there’s less fatty tissue present, thin hairs can be placed in the temples, and therefore a straighter hairline can be achieved. Women also have different forehead muscles (which makes the DHI or percutaneous technique unsuitable).
A hair transplant for both men and women shouldn’t be carried out while you’re still going through puberty. This is because there’s a high chance that any hair loss can grow back naturally. In summary, hormones have a huge impact on hair loss, so it’s no wonder that puberty can impact your hair growth.
Although hair transplants can be performed at a younger age, it’s not recommended to have one until you’re older than 25. Therefore the best age for women to get a hair transplant is 25+.
To conclude, your hairline may not be fully established until this age. Also, the pattern of your hairloss isn’t usually clear at this age. When the pattern of your baldness is properly formed, our team can clearly predict how it will progress. This enables the team to perform surgery that will rectify it.
Al in all, if you have a hair transplant too early, you may encounter further problems down the line.
Thanks to the use of local anaesthesia and aftercare medication, a hair transplant isn’t painful. Some patients report feeling slight pressure, however, very little pain is reported. Furthermore, Elithair use the Comfort-In method which administers the anaesthetic without using any needles.
This needle-free application is also ideal for patients who are anxious about needles. Did you know that the fear of needles (Aichmophobia) is believed to affect around 1 in 4 people in the UK. That’s one-quarter of the population!
Elithair wants you to feel comfortable when you have your hair transplant surgery, so we’ve taken every step to make it as pain-free and comfortable as possible.
Many women have a hair transplant, however, it can be a sensitive subject. Just like female hair loss is hidden, hair transplants are also hidden – that is until they’re completely healed.
Some women opt for a temporary head wrap to conceal their transplanted hair while they’re still growing out. Then when it’s all fully healed they discover a new lease of self-confidence.
